A graphical user interface (or GUI, sometimes pronounced "gooey") is a method of interacting with a computer through a metaphor of direct manipulation of graphical images and widgets in addition to text.

GUIs display visual elements such as icons, windows and other gadgets. The precursor to GUIs was invented by researchers at the Stanford Research Institute (led by Doug Engelbart) with the development and use of text-based hyperlinks manipulated with a mouse for the On-Line System. The concept of hyperlinks was further refined and extended to graphics by researchers at Xerox PARC, who went beyond text-based hyperlinks and used GUIs as the primary interface for the Xerox Alto computer. Most modern general-purpose GUIs are derived from this system. For this reason some people call this class of interface a PARC User Interface (PUI) (note that PUI is also an acronym for perceptual user interface). The PUI consists of graphical widgets (often provided by widget toolkit libraries) such as windows, menus, radio buttons, check boxes and icons, and employs a pointing device (such as a mouse, trackball or touchscreen) in addition to a keyboard. Those aspects of PUIs can be emphasized by using the alternative acronym WIMP, which stands for Windows, Icons, Menus and Pointing device...

In computing, skins and themes are custom graphical appearances (GUIs) that can be applied to certain software and websites in order to suit the different tastes of different users. Such software is referred to as being skinnable, and the process of writing or applying such a skin is known as skinning. Applying a skin changes a piece of software's look and feel - some skins merely make the program more aesthetically pleasing, but others can rearrange elements of the interface, potentially making the program easier to use. Although often used simply as a synonym for skin, the term theme normally refers to less-complex customisations, such as a set of icons and matching colour scheme for an operating system - notably, this is how the term was used in association with Windows 95 and Microsoft Plus! for Windows 95. Probably the most popular customised skins are for instant messengers and media players, such as the AOL Instant Messenger, and Winamp, due to the association with fun such programs try to encourage. However, in programs... Skin

Virtual desktop is a term used, usually within the WIMP paradigm, to describe any of several possible ways in which a computer's metaphorical desktop environment is modified, through the use of software. The modifications are primarily to increase a user's ability to organise their windowed applications that are currently running by reducing clutter. There are several types of virtual desktop system. All of them provide a "virtual" space, in addition to what is provided by the computer's physical hardware display, in which the user can place their application's windows. As a trade-off, all of the available space might not be able to be visually displayed at one time, or the quality of its display may be degraded in some way. The most common type of virtual desktop provides a way for the user to switch between "contexts", only one of which can be displayed on the computer's display at any given time. Rather than simply being placed at an x,y position on the computer's display, windows of running applications are then placed at x,y positions on a given "virtual... Virtual Desktop

 Paraguay

The Republic of Paraguay is a landlocked nation in South America. It lies on both banks of the Paraguay River, bordering Argentina to the south and southwest, Brazil to the northeast, and Bolivia to the northwest. The name of the country means "water that goes to the ocean," derived from the Guarani words pará ("ocean"), gua ("to/from"), and y ("water"). The expression in Guarani often refers solely to Asunción, but in Spanish refers to the entire country.

History

Main article: History of Paraguay

Europeans first arrived in the area in the early 16th century and the settlement of Asunción was founded in 1537, by the Spanish explorer Juan de Salazar. The city eventually became the center of a Spanish colonial province, as well as a primary site of the Jesuit missions and settlements in South America in the 18th century. Paraguay declared its independence by overthrowing the local Spanish authorities on May 15, 1811.

In the disastrous War of the Triple Alliance (1865–1870), Paraguay lost two-thirds of its adult male population and 140,000 km² of its territory. It stagnated economically for the next half century. In the Chaco War of 1932 to 1935, invading Bolivian troops, trying to gain a port on the Paraguay river for their landlocked country, were expelled by the Paraguayan Armed Forces from most of the Chaco region. The Chaco had been claimed by both countries, but the settlements in the region were mostly Paraguayan. The 35-year military dictatorship of Alfredo Stroessner was overthrown in 1989, and, despite a marked increase in political infighting in recent years, relatively free and regular presidential elections have been held since then. However, the democracy that exists in the country, while a great improvement on the 'stronato' is very limited. It is hampered by the widespread corruption and lack of any democratic political culture.

Politics

Main article: Politics of Paraguay

Paraguay's highly centralised and often dictatorial government was fundamentally changed by the 1992 constitution, which provides for a division of powers. The president and vice president are elected on the same ticket by popular vote for five-year terms, after which the president appoints a cabinet. The president functions as both head of state and head of government.

The bicameral parliament, the Congress or Congreso, consists of an 80-member Chamber of Deputies (Cámara de Diputados) and a 45-member Senate (Cámara de Senadores), elected concurrently with the president through a proportional representation system. Deputies are elected by department and senators nationwide on a list system, both for five-year terms. Each of Paraguay's 17 departments is headed by a popularly elected governor.

Paraguay's highest court is the Supreme Court. The Senate and the president select its nine members on the basis of recommendations from a constitutionally created Magistrates Council. A Paraguayan peculiarity is its flag, which features a slightly different design on the reverse side than on the front. The three stripes on the flag (red, white, and blue) come from the French flag. The front side contains the National Seal of Paraguay and the reverse contains the words "Paz y Justicia"(Peace and Justice) along with a lion and a Phrygian Cap on a pole.

Departments

Main article: Departments of Paraguay

Paraguay consists of 18 departments (departamentos, singular - departamento):

  • Alto Paraguay

  • Alto Paraná

  • Amambay

  • Asunción

  • Boquerón

  • Caaguazú

  • Caazapá

  • Canindeyú

  • Central

  • Concepción

  • Cordillera

  • Guairá

  • Itapúa

  • Misiones

  • Ñeembucú

  • Paraguarí

  • Presidente Hayes

  • San Pedro

The (Gran) Chaco features mostly low, marshy plains near the river and dry forest and thorny scrub further west. The highest point is the Cerro Pero (Cerro Tres Kandu) at 842 m. The southeastern border is formed by the Parana River, containing the impressive Itaipu dam it shares with Brazil. It is currently the largest hydroelectric power plant in the world, generating nearly all of Paraguay's electricity.

The local climate ranges from subtropical to temperate, with substantial rainfall in the eastern portions, though becoming semi-arid in the far west.

Economy

Main article: Economy of Paraguay

Paraguay has a market economy marked by a large informal sector. The informal sector features both re-export of imported consumer goods to neighbouring countries as well as the activities of thousands of microenterprises and urban street vendors. Because of the importance of the informal sector, accurate economic measures are difficult to obtain. A large percentage of the population derive their living from agricultural activity, often on a subsistence basis.

Paraguay's economy is very dependent on Brazil, its neighbour in the east. Most of the country's imports come through the Brazilian port of Paranaguá by highway, on trucks. Ciudad del Este is the third largest free-tax commerce zone of the world, only behind Hong Kong and Miami. The country holds the impressive Itaipu dam which used to be the largest concrete structure, the largest dam and the largest power plant of the world. Itaipu's energy supplies about 20% of the current Brazilian needs and is the most important export good of Paraguay. The selling of cheaper goods is another important source of revenue and it is still a common habit in Brazil to go to Paraguay and buy electronics, like TV sets and sound systems there. About 60% of the country's GDP comes from commerce with Brazil. Nearly all the rest comes from commerce with Argentina with which the country shares another major power plant: Yaciretá.

The formal economy grew by an average of about 3% annually in 1995-1997, but its GDP declined slightly in 1998, 1999, and 2000. Despite difficulties arising from political instability, corruption, slow structural reforms, high internal and external debts and deficient infrastructure; it is believed that the factor that most contributed to the stagnation of Paraguayan economy was the devaluation of the Brazilian currency, the Real, in 1998; which caused Paraguayan shops to lose their attractiveness (as prices there are mostly dollarised).

Since 1991 Paraguay has been a member of the free trade bloc MERCOSUR.

Demographics

Main article: Demographics of Paraguay

Ethnically, culturally, and socially, Paraguay has one of the most homogeneous populations in Latin America. About 95% of the people are mestizos of mixed Spanish and Guarani Indian descent. Little trace is left of the original Guarani culture except the language, which is spoken by 90% of the population. About 75% of all Paraguayans can speak Spanish. Guarani and Spanish are official languages. Germans, Japanese, Koreans, ethnic Chinese, Arabs, Brazilians, and Argentines are among those who have settled in Paraguay and they have to an extent retained their respective languages.

Paraguay's population is distributed unevenly throughout the country. The vast majority of the people live in the eastern region, most within 160 kilometers of Asunción, the capital and largest city. The Chaco, which accounts for about 60% of the territory, is home to less than 2% of the population. The country is predominantly Roman Catholic, with some Mennonite and other Protestant minorities.

Spotlight on XSL (Intermediate Article)

The eXtensible Stylesheet Language (XSL) is a family of languages which allows one to describe how files encoded in the XML standard are to be formatted or transformed. There are three languages in the family:

- XSL Transformations (XSLT): an XML language for transforming XML documents

- XSL Formatting Objects (XSL-FO): an XML language for specifying the visual formatting of an XML document

- the XML Path Language (XPath): a non-XML language used by XSLT, and also available for use in non-XSLT contexts, for addressing the parts of an XML document.

These three specifications are available in the form of W3C Recommendations.

Within Microsoft, the term XSL is sometimes used to refer to a Microsoft variant of XSLT developed as an implementation of an early (1998) W3C draft of the XSLT language, with Microsoft-specific extensions and omissions. Other commentators generally refer to this dialect as WD-xsl. The dialect was later superseded by a conformant implementation of the W3C specification.

XSL started off as an attempt to bring the functionality of DSSSL, particularly in the area of print and high-end typeseting, to XML. A W3C Working group on XSL was started in December 1997, with Sharon Adler and Steve Zilles as co-chairs, with James Clark acting as editor (and unofficially as chief designer), and Chris Lilley as W3C staff contact. The group released a first public Working Draft on 18 August 1998. XSLT and XPath became W3C Recommendations on 16 November 1999 and XSL reached Recommendation status on 15 October 2001.

X-Query (Intermediate Article)

XQuery is a query language (with some programming language features) that is designed to query collections of XML data. It is semantically similar to SQL.

XQuery 1.0 is being developed by the XML Query working group of the W3C. The work is closely coordinated with the development of XSLT 2.0 by the XSL Working Group; the two groups share responsibility for XPath 2.0, which is a subset of XQuery 1.0. XQuery 1.0 became a W3C Candidate Recommendation on November 3, 2005.

XQuery provides the means to extract and manipulate data from XML documents or any data source that can be viewed as XML, such as relational databases or office documents.

XQuery uses XPath expression syntax to address specific parts of an XML document. It supplements this with a SQL-like "FLWOR expression" for performing joins. A FLWOR expression is constructed from the five clauses after which it is named: FOR, LET, WHERE, ORDER BY, RETURN.

The language also provides syntax allowing new XML documents to be constructed. Where the element and attribute names are known in advance, an XML-like syntax can be used; in other cases, expressions referred to as dynamic node constructors are available. All these constructs are defined as expressions within the language, and can be arbitrarily nested.

The language is based on a tree-structured model of the information content of an XML document, containing seven kinds of node: document nodes, elements, attributes, text nodes, comments, processing instructions, and namespaces.

The type system of the language models all values as sequences (a singleton value is considered to be a sequence of length one). The items in a sequence can either be nodes or atomic values. Atomic values may be integers, strings, booleans, and so on: the full list of types is based on the primitive types defined in XML Schema.

XQuery 1.0 does not include features for updating XML documents or databases. It also lacks full text search capability. These features are both under active development for a subsequent version of the language.

YAML (Novice Article)

YAML is a human-readable data serialization format that takes concepts from languages such as XML, C, Python, Perl, as well as the format for electronic mail as specified by RFC 2822. YAML was first proposed by Clark Evans, who designed it together with Ingy döt Net and Oren Ben-Kiki.

YAML is a recursive acronym meaning "YAML Ain't Markup Language". Early in its development, YAML was said to mean "Yet Another Markup Language", retronymed to distinguish its purpose as data-centric, rather than document markup. However since XML (a true document markup language) is frequently used for data serialization, it is reasonable to consider YAML a lightweight markup language.

YAML was created with the belief that all data can be adequately represented by combinations of lists, hashes (mappings), and scalar (single value) data. The syntax is relatively straightforward and was designed with human readability in mind, but also to be easily mapped to data types common to most high-level languages. In addition, YAML uses a notation based on indentation and/or a set of sigil characters distinct from those used in XML, making the two languages easily composable.

XML Schema (Advanced Article)

An XML schema is a description of a type of XML document, typically expressed in terms of constraints on the structure and content of documents of that type, above and beyond the basic syntax constraints imposed by XML itself. An XML schema provides a view of the document type at a relatively high level of abstraction.

There are languages developed specifically to express XML schemas. The Document Type Definition (DTD) language, which is native to the XML specification, is a schema language that is of relatively limited capability, but that also has other uses in XML aside from the expression of schemas. Two other very popular, more expressive XML schema languages are XML Schema and RELAX NG.

The mechanism for associating an XML document with a schema varies according to the schema language. The association may be achieved via markup within the XML document itself, or via some external means.

The process of checking to see if an XML document conforms to a schema is called validation, which is separate from XML's core concept of syntactic well-formedness. All XML documents must be well-formed, but it is not required that a document be valid unless the XML parser is "validating", in which case the document is also checked for conformance with its associated schema. DTD-validating parsers are most common, but some support W3C XML Schema or RELAX NG as well.

Documents are only considered valid if they satisfy the requirements of the schema with which they have been associated. These requirements typically include such constraints as:

Elements and attributes that must/may be included, and their permitted structure
How character data is to be interpreted, e.g. as a number, a date, a URL, a Boolean, etc
