Although there were probably people collecting casino chips as long as casino chips have been used, it wasn't until 1988 that the hobby really began to expand rapidly, with the establishment of the Casino Chip & Gaming Token Collectors Club that year. Today, the club membership numbers several thousand.

Another boost to casino chip, token and memorabilia collecting came with the establishment of eBay, the online auction site. Listings in the casino category regularly include over 20,000 items for sale.
